Last Monday, Fire Chief Rob Arbini updated Kiwanis Club members on plans at the fire authority. Because the millage passed, $500,000 is available to provide for 3 new people and for trucks and equipment.
The fire authority has a new vehicle to rescue someone in the nearby non-motorized trails. They are planning to have a vehicle and staff part-time at the new Lyndon Township fire station at township hall. The annual open house at the fire station is scheduled for October again this year.
Sgt. Rich Kinsey was joined by several officers from the Chelsea Police Department. He said officers really appreciate the residents of Chelsea, many greet police with a friendly wave. There is constant training on going at both departments.
In the police department, training topics include fair and impartial policing, and managing mental health crises. Since mental hospitals have closed, jails now hold those formerly hospitalized.
On Monday, the club will celebrate its 95th anniversary as a service club in Chelsea. April 21, 1924 marks the Chelsea Club’s beginning as the 1203rd Kiwanis club in the world.
The first club began in Detroit just nine years earlier. Today, Kiwanis has more than 550,000 members in 80 countries, including K Kids (elementary school), Builders Clubs (middle school), Key Club (high school), Circle K (college), Kiwanis Club (adult), and Aktion Club (adults with disabilities).
Chelsea club members have invited neighboring Kiwanis clubs to share the evening. The speaker will be Matt Pedlow from Chelsea High School. Each year, he leads a tour of the Gettysburg battlefield for his students.
Each spin is a dollar, which goes to the group of your choice.
On Saturday, April 20, everyone is invited to bring their children, grandchildren or even great grandchildren to Chelsea Retirement Community on West Middle Street. The Easter Bunny will be there beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Starting at 10 a.m., the bunny will signal the start of the Easter Egg Hunt. There are three separate areas for age groups. And, the Bunny will begin with the youngest group. Every egg is filled with a treat, and some have a slip of paper worth a nice prize from the Bunny.
Chelsea club members will be there to assist the Chelsea High School Key Club in this fun annual event.
Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.
