Ugly Dog Distillery is one step closer to moving to the former UAW Hall on South Main Street in downtown Chelsea from its current location at 14495 North Territorial Road.

The Chelsea Planning Commission unanimously approved a recommendation to send to the Chelsea City Council a request to amend Zoning Ordinance No. 16, Section 4.17(B), Central Business District (C-5) Special Uses to add the following text: “Manufacturing of beverages when combined with accessory uses such as retail sales, tasting room or special event space, provided that the manufacturing operation does not exceed 6,000 square feet and storage of ingredients and finished inventory are housed in the building until the event of use, include sale, which is contingent on legal review.”

At a public hearing that preceded the vote, local business owners and Chelsea Chamber of Commerce leaders spoke in favor of the Ugly Dog Distillery moving to downtown Chelsea.

“Our goal is to come to downtown Chelsea and enhance it with a craft distillery experience,” said David Salmon, CEO of Ugly Dog Distillery. “We want to bring tourism to Chelsea.”

In other action, the planning commission unanimously approved a combined preliminary and final site plan with some contingencies for Chelsea Family Dentistry at 218 S. Main St.

  1. I don’t like the direction chelsea is going in. More and more alcohol related businesses are moving into town. Alcohol =drunkenness, drunk driving in my town !
This is a bad decision to appove this and I don’t really care what kind of revenue it will bring. I’m sure alot of people are happy about a vodka distillery moving into town. Im not!

    Thanks, Tom D.
