In March of 2023, a team of Chelsea Senior Center members, led by Bill O’Reilly, CSC’s director held the first meeting of the CSC Waste Reduction Committee (CSCWRC).
Some recycling has always occurred at the CSC, including cardboard, paper, etc. Available is “bottled water” in large 5-gallon containers are exchanged for full ones as needed and there is a water fountain that provides for easy refilling of personal bottles while keeping track of how many plastic bottles have been avoided.
As of Aug. 2, 1,992 bottles have been avoided.
Ink jets cartridges and batteries are recycled by office staff.
CSCWRC met to identify ways that we could make a bigger environmental impact and educate our members.
Besides trash boxes, several recycle containers were added to rooms used by members. The Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority was contacted to bring a large container so CSC could participate in Chelsea’s curbside recycling program.
On July 17, thoughtful changes were made to our Cafe Lunch Program to “reduce costs and streamline process; be better stewards of our planet by limiting plastic and “foam” (Styrofoam) use when possible; and promote food safety.”
This eliminated plastic boxes and foam containers for taking food home and the use of plastic water bottles. Members were encouraged to bring their own containers.
At CSC events, all dinnerware, beverage containers, and flatware is reusable, recyclable, and/or compostable. All of this is possible because our staff and members care and want to make life better for all.
I am a long-time member of CSC as well as the Chelsea Zero Waste Coalition, and now CSCWR. I am proud to be CSC member and proud of all that our staff accomplishes. They are all leaders and innovators. We frequently hear praise from members and non-members for CSC programs, events, and community outreach.
CSC is a great place to learn, play, and belong.
