Chelsea varsity baseball 16-6-1 on season; complete weekend sweep

Chelsea varsity baseball swept a double header on Saturday to finish the week 4-1.

The Bulldogs started with a doubleheader sweep of Ypsilanti last Monday, 9-5 and 14-0, and the two wins kept Chelsea in contention for the SEC White title.

Chelsea lost a heartbreaker to Ypsilanti 3-2 on Wednesday.

Friday saw the Bulldogs travel to Brighton take on the No. 2 state-ranked team in what was supposed to be a doubleheader. Mother Nature did not cooperate and the games were called with Chelsea ahead 3-1 in game one behind the pitching of senior Grant Ortbring and a bases loaded double by junior Jacob Scheese and a single by Ortbring.

Saturday saw Chelsea take on Ida and Jackson Northwest in a split affair. In the opener, the Bulldogs got good pitching from senior Ryan Eisley and timely hitting from sophomore Matt McDaniels (2 hits), senior Cam Starkey (RBI) and Ortbring (2 hits, 3 RBI) for a 5-2 victory. Senior Sam Almhiemid made two diving catches in the outfield to save 2 runs.

In game two, junior Evan Hafley spun a 4-hit shutout as the Bulldogs held on for 2-0 win. The offense was led by sophomore Drew Ansted with a clutch 2 out, 2 run single. Starkey, Colin Steinhauer and Ortbring each had a hit, while senior Daniel Lindauer banged out 2 hits. The defense again played a big role in the victory with Almhiemid making another over the shoulder diving catch to save 2 runs and sophomore Jack Bush making 2 diving catches in the outfield.

The Bulldogs have a big 3-game series with rival Dexter this week, and the team’s record stands at 16-6-1 with 2 weeks left in the season.
