Co. C puts on strong performance at Showcase of Choirs

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Sue Whitmarsh for the information and the slide show with this story.)

Five other Michigan High Schools joined Chelsea on Saturday for the annual Showcase of Choirs.  Each group performed a set comprising five or so numbers from different music genres including rock and roll, Motown, pop, swing and musical theatre.

Chelsea’s 45-strong member Co.C closed out the evening with a rousing performance of 20s, 30s and 40s era pieces including 42nd Street, Get Happy and a Gerschwin/Berlin mash up of fascinating Rhythm and I Got Rhythm. Director of Vocal Music and Co.C leader Steve Hinz was brimming with praise for his students.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled with the students as I watched them on stage on Saturday night with our huge audience of supporters,” said Hinz .

“While I was proud of their performance, I’m even more proud of the journey that we are on together that we launched back in January. We worked hard in play and rehearsals, our choreography boot camp, an intense retreat together at Storer Camp in Jackson, and inspired rehearsals on stage this past week,” he said, adding, “They have taken great pride in developing an environment of trust, respect, and support, and through this development of relationships, have successfully helped each other find their powerful potential.  I can’t wait for what is in store for the rest of our season ahead.”

Audience opinions shared at the event’s afterglow party agreed that this year’s Showcase was among the best ever, with every one of the six schools showcasing a wonderful repertoire.

Co.C returns later this spring for two nights, Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16 at CHS for their Spring Show, entitled Deco Soirée, so mark your calendars now.

In the meantime, please join Co.C for their ‘FunRaiser’ on April 1 – yes, really – which will feature a BBQ dinner and auction. More details to come.
