Crossing Guard and School Bus Reminders for Aug. 29 First Day of School in Chelsea

With Chelsea District Schools set to open on Monday, Aug. 29, drivers are reminded that once again, there will be school busses, crossing guards and children in and on the roads and sidewalks.

Please slow down and give yourself more time to get where you need to go.

“Our children are the most valuable treasure in Chelsea,” said Interim Police Chief Rich Kinsey, and he wants to make sure the children are kept safe.

He said in addition to stopping for school buses and crossing guards, there will be police officers out in force, especially at the approaches to the schools — both in the morning and in the afternoon — with the resumption of school.

A good rule of thumb is between 7:30-8:15 a.m. and between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

And just as motorists should slow down and stop for school buses with flashing yellow lights, which will be followed by red lights and stop signs that appear on the sides of the buses; also slow down and stop for crossing guards in the road holding stop signs to assist children crossing the roads.

“Our crossing guards are unsung heroes, keeping our children safe,” Kinsey said.

There will be crossing guards at six intersections in the city:

  • South Main and Pierce St.
  • McKinley and Dewey
  • McKinley and Elm
  • Freer and AD Mayer
  • Freer and Darwin
  • Madison and AD Mayer

Kinsey suggests motorists get up a little earlier and leave more time to get where they need to go in the morning or leave more time in the afternoon when schools let out.

Wear sun glasses to cut down on sun glare when driving.

And, if drivers are caught breaking the law, they will be issued a ticket.

“Just please, slow down,” he said.

In addition, there is one opening for a substitute crossing guard. Anyone interested can go to the city’s website https://www.city-chelsea.org/Employment and go to the employment page for more information.
