Explore your inner toddler

Amy-Heydlauff(Chelsea Update would like to thank Amy Heydlauff for the information in this column.)

It is likely your top priority, day to day, isn’t your long-term health.

Assuming that’s true, and for most of us it is, here’s something we’d like you to try. It’s so simple even a toddler can do it. And most of them do. Ask yourself:

Why should I care about being well?

Don’t settle for the first answer – which will probably be something like “I want to live a long time.” Or “I want to feel good.” Dig a little deeper. Like a toddler.

Here are some examples to give you an idea.

Why should I care about wellness?

Because at my age if I don’t make an effort to stay healthy things go downhill quickly.

Why?

That’s just how it is. And I don’t like the feeling of getting old.

Why?

My family and friends are fun and I don’t want to be left out.

Why should I care about wellness?

Because I need to set an example for my kids.

Why?

I am responsible for teaching them how to live.

Why?

I accepted that responsibility when I decided to have children.

Why?

Family is the most important thing. I want the best for my family.

Why should I care about wellness?

I want to look and feel good.

Why?

When I feel fit and look good in my clothes I am confident. That’s a great feeling.

Take as many ‘whys’ as you need – the last answer is the revelation. You will know when you hit that kernel of what really matters to you. If you’re a parent you probably won’t stop at “I’m responsible for the family.” It won’t be satisfying enough. Find the answer that feels satisfying for you.

We hope you have a little fun exploring your inner toddler.
