If you are a long-time Chelsea Community Fair visitor, who enjoyed lunch or dinner at the Fair Restaurant in the Service Center, you probably remember Ginny and Shelly Wheaton’s Sloppy Joes, mac and cheese and roast pork from 1986 to 2007.

Guess what. They’re back this year, so get ready to enjoy dinner specials of Swiss Steak on Tuesday, lasagna on Wednesday, meatloaf on Thursday, spaghetti on Friday and roast pork on Saturday.

Oh, and did I mention Kathy “Cakes” Haywood‘s homemade cakes and cobblers will be available this year as well?

Yup, the old gang is back in the fair restaurant kitchen.

“We’re excited to be back,” said Shelly Wheaton, of Chelsea, who left the area and returned recently. In fact, the whole family will be involved with Shelly’s son, Jared Beaver, helping out between varsity football practices.

They will provide an a la carte breakfast from 7 a.m.-10:30 a.m. during which diners will have a choice of eggs cooked to your liking or French toast or pancakes. There will be sausage, bacon or biscuits and gravy to choose from as well.

Lunch is served beginning at 11 a.m. and dinner specials start at 4 p.m.. Dinner is served until 8:30 p.m., but be sure to get there early because you don’t want to miss out on the daily specials.

The lunch menu includes a choice of grilled cheese, mac and cheese, grilled hotdogs or hamburgers and French fries. Or perhaps you’d prefer a salad bar, or maybe a tuna or egg sandwich on a croissant. There’s something for everyone. And, chips and cookies, plus those delicious homemade cakes and cobblers.

It takes about 25 people to keep everything running smoothly and the Wheatons are looking for volunteers to assist them in the kitchen and in the dining room. It would make a great service project for a community group and a fun way to see folks you don’t run into much during the year because fair is always a place where old friends return to Chelsea and gather.

“We are hoping people will be willing to volunteer for even one shift,” Shelly Wheaton says, so please call 475-0792 and offer a helping hand.

The Fair Restaurant “is a place with air conditioning and seating where you can take a break from all the fun, regroup, and eat a meal that won’t cost you an arm and a leg,” Shelly Wheaton says.

And for these long-time Chelsea residents, “instead of a mom and pop thing, this is a mother-daughter thing,” Shelly Wheaton says.
