(Chelsea Update would like to thank Jessica Schmidt for the information in this story and Burrill Strong for the photos in the gallery.)

The Chelsea District Library’s Summer Reading/Summer Learning Program started on a high note at the kick-off on Wednesday, June 10, with more than 600 people attending.

Following the “Every Hero Has a Story” theme for this summer’s program, kids chose a superhero name at the identity generator station, used foam gliders for target practice against posters of villains, slid through a “laser” maze made of neon string, and decorated masks and arm cuffs. ATA Martial Arts was also on hand to help kids with superhero conditioning and self-defense skills.

The climbing wall was the big hit of the day, and the air filled with horn honks each time a child or teen reached the top of the wall.

Over 700 kids and teens are now registered for Summer Reading/Summer Learning. The program encourages kids and teens to stay engaged with reading goals, learning challenges, and the opportunity to earn prizes all summer long.

For families who could not make the Kickoff, there’s still plenty of time to visit the library and sign up. Find out more by clicking here.
