The Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting Friday morning for city’s newest business, the Chelsea Underground Art Gallery.

Newly elected President of the Chamber Board of Directors Ian Boone welcomed Alison Mackie to the downtown and reminded her that both chamber staff and the more than 275-member businesses can be great resources for a new business owner.

“We welcome you to the neighborhood,” Boone said, adding that his father-in-law used to have an office in the current art gallery space at 105 1/2 South Main St. and offered to help her sweep snow off the stairs as he’d done for his in-law in the past.

“This is a spot of rebirth,” he said, because both out-of-town and local artists have work for sale in the space.

Mackie reminded those in attendance that there would be a grand opening for the gallery’s first exhibition today, May 2, from 5-8 p.m. and that from 7-8 p.m., those who could not get inside the gallery by navigating the stairs would be able to see the artwork because it would be brought outside for everyone to see.

The Opening Exhibition is titled “From the Outside Looking In: Diversity and Community” and highlights the works of artist Richard Meyer from New York City, Jeannette Gregori from Starsbourg, France, potters Doug Worthington, Anne K. Beyer and Ken Shenstone, sculptor Rick De Troyer, and carpenter Matthew Millar.
