It’s official, the Chelsea Recreation Council will dissolve on Dec. 31

Chelsea RecreationThe Chelsea City Council unanimously voted to dissolve a charter agreement between the then-village and the Chelsea School District, which created the Chelsea Recreation Council.

This action follows a decision by the Rec Council that after 42 years, “it is in the best interest of the community for the recreation board to disband and for Chelsea School District Community Education to begin recreation programming starting in January 2014,” according to the resolution.

The board was formed in 1971 as a joint venture of the village and the school district.

“Recreation programming and any or all assets of the Chelsea Recreation Board” will be transferred to the Chelsea District Schools.

David Proegler, president of the Chelsea Rec Board, sent a letter to the City Council on Oct. 7, informing the council that the rec board had voted to dissolve the charter agreement that was established on May 4, 1971 and if approved by the City Council, the board would cease to exist as of Dec. 31.

“We believe that this action will clear the way for Chelsea Community Education to provide the community a single point of access for recreation and continuing educational services, gain economies of scale by eliminating a separate managing authority and provide even better programming through a tighter alignment with the schools’ athletic coaches and administration,” the letter states.
