June 9: race unity potluck picnic at Pierce Park

Each year since 1957, Baha’is and many friends in Washtenaw County have observed Race Unity Day with a picnic.

This year, Chelsea’s Pierce Park will be the site of a potluck picnic on Saturday, June 9 from 2-5 p.m. Everyone is invited to celebrate the oneness of humankind with like-minded people.

Race Unity Day, initially called Race Amity Day, was inaugurated in 1957 by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States to promote racial harmony and understanding.

The day is not specifically a Baha’i observance and is widely appreciated and participated in. It is now observed worldwide as a cultural event and has become a state-sponsored day in New Zealand. It is also sometimes the focus of conferences to promote racial understanding.

The Race Unity Day Potluck Picnic is open to all who share an interest in the oneness of humankind.

Those wishing to attend may bring a dish to share and their own tableware. Frisbees, balls, and bats are welcome for shared exercise and entertainment.

For more information, call 734-731-6441 or 734-649-5338.
