Chelsea Kiwanis will hold a voter education session to learn how redistricting happens now, how Proposal 2 will change the current process, and what it means for Michigan voters if it passes.

This will help voters make an informed choice when they go to the polls on Nov. 6. Local resident Elizabeth Hammer will lead the discussion.

Michigan congressional and state legislative district boundaries are redrawn every 10 years following completion of the United States census. While there are surely legitimate reasons for some of the eccentric boundaries on some legislative districts in Michigan, just as likely are political advantage considerations by the party in power at the time.  Since the early 1800’s the more cynical description of redistricting has been gerrymandering.

Proposal 2 on the November ballot would amend the Michigan Constitution to create a commission of citizens to adopt district boundaries.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.

Go to www.kiwanisclubofchelsea.org for more information.

The club is also planning another year of service to the Chelsea community. If anyone has ideas/suggestions where the Chelsea Kiwanis Club may be of service, especially if the idea benefits children, please share your thoughts with any Kiwanian.
