Letter to the Editor: The Sequel to the Lone Oak in Sylvan Township

Photo by Gary Galvin. The couple’s lone oak was spared from removal for the Consumer’s Energy pipeline project.

Dear Editor:

Living next to a pipeline will have its challenges, but the “Lone Oak” is still standing.

After consideration of our requests, Consumers Energy Company issued a reprieve for the oak tree.

The 250-year-old oak has been heavily trimmed but was spared being razed. In addition to trimming, the future challenges include 12 inches of topsoil being removed from around the tree and the loss of whatever roots that will be cut by the pipeline trench 50 feet from the trunk.

There are few guarantees in life, mostly just chances, and the tree has been given its chance for survival.

Our family appreciates this project amendment and thanks Consumers Energy Company for this chance.

Gary & Doris Galvin
