The Lima Township Board unanimously approved a special land use application for Diamond Marble and Tile at its meeting on Monday, Jan. 13.

The granite counter manufacturer is located in the light industrial are on Luick Drive in the old 3D building.

The township currently allows manufacturing of steel and other materials in the district, but there were no provisions for stone manufacturing, cutting, and storage.

The special land use allows for the cutting of stone with wet saws, as well as allowing customer visits. In return, Diamond Marble and Tile has agreed to install a dumpster for stone scrap, and a shed for outdoor stone slab storage.

Diamond Tile  also agreed to install a waste water treatment system within a year of the granting of the special land use.

The board also discussed a proposed special events ordinance, which would help insure the safety of residents when a large event is held within the township. The discussion stems from concerns over an inadequate parking situation at an event that was held in the township last year.

Township Supervisor Craig Maier said, “There were mothers with strollers walking down the middle of Jackson Road, and that’s just dangerous. I’m surprised no one got hurt.”

The Township Board plans to study the existing Sylvan and Ann Arbor Township special events ordinances and work on something similar for Lima Township.
