Mark your calendar: Feb. 8 is the Chelsea City Council visioning session

Chelsea logoIn its last meeting of 2016 on Monday, Dec. 19, the Chelsea City Council unanimously approved Jon VanHoek as the newest member of the city’s Parks Committee.

A city resident for more than 5 years, VanHoek is well known around town as the captain of Chelsea Monitors vintage base ball club, which plays its home matches at Timbertown.

He is the father of three young children.

Council Member and Parks Committee member Melissa Johnson told the City Council that VanHoek not only used the city’s parks but also organized a group of Monitors players to help with the recent parks clean-up day.

His appointment runs through August, 2017.

The City Council also unanimously approved an about $350,000 energy supply purchase for the city.

In addition, the City Council approved an about $205,000 engineering proposal from Process Results, Inc. for a grant that the city was awarded from the state. The SAW grant will provide 90 percent of the funding for the development of an asset management plan for the city’s wastewater and storm water systems.

Included in those plans are the digitization of the city’s existing wastewater and stormwater records, a GIS system of sanitary sewers older than 20 years, and a listing and condition assessment of other assets such as the wastewater treatment plant equipment, pumps stations, etc.

Also included will be the development of a rate structure that adequately covers the utilities’ expenses, and will help city staff determine residential and commercial rate charges.

It’s expected that the city’s sanitary sewers will be cleaned and televised to determine their condition in the spring or summer of 2017.

The City Council also set Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 5:30 p.m. as the date and time for the annual visioning session. The meeting will take place in the McKune Room of the Chelsea District Library.
