Mark your calendar: Chelsea council sets key meeting dates

The Chelsea City Council had quite an extensive business agenda at its Nov. 16 regular meeting that began with the unanimous approval of a work session in January to discuss the Chelsea Police Department.

Put forth by Council Member Peter Feeney, the discussion will take place beginning at 6 p.m. on Jan. 11 and follow the outline that was discussed at the city’s recent visioning session.

Before suggesting the date, Feeney addressed the City Council with a historical perspective of negative situations that city residents turned into something positive. Calling the community a group of “doers” he explained that change takes time, but that this community knows how to come together for to do so thoughtfully and constructively.

Please take a few minutes to listen to what he had to say by going to the city’s website here. https://chelseami.viebit.com/index.php?folder=ALL/

The City Council also approved its regular meeting dates for 2021, which typically take place the first and third Mondays of the month beginning at 7 p.m. This year, there will be several Tuesday meetings to accommodate Federal holidays that fall on a Monday. The complete meeting date list can be found at the end of this story.

Also scheduled was a joint work session between the City Council and the Planning Commission to discuss a draft of the city’s new Zoning ordinance. This meeting will take place on Thursday, Dec. 17 beginning at 7 p.m. with the city’s consultant McKenna.

Mayor Melissa Johnson reminded everyone that his new zoning ordinance applies to just the 3.3 square miles that comprise the City of Chelsea. Surrounding townships have separate zoning ordinances that apply outside the city.

(Publisher’s note: this is one of several stories that will be published about this meeting.)
