Gardeners looking to enhance their yards and flower or vegetable beds will find high quality, locally grown perennials, ornamental grasses, daylilies, herbs and other assorted plants at the Chelsea Area Garden Club (CAGC) May 6 plant sale.

CAGC’s 19th annual sale will be held rain or shine 8 a.m.-noon at the Chelsea Community Fairgrounds, 20501 W. Old U.S. Highway 12. Admission is free.

“Come early for the best selection,” advises Cathy Gillem, plant sale co-chair and CAGC vice president. Club members collect and pot plants from members’ and friends’ gardens for the sale.

“We’re very proud of the quality of our plants,” says Mary Randolph, the other plant sale co-chair. “Plants are organized by type, including whether they grow best in shade or sun, to make shopping easier. Most plants sell for $5 or less.”

Plant sale proceeds are used for grants and scholarships and horticulture-related community projects. CAGC 2017 grant recipients include the Chelsea Senior Center to hire a summer intern to work with seniors and children at its Intergenerational Garden, the Chelsea Farmers Market for children’s activities, the Chelsea District Library to create a fairy garden, Chelsea Faith in Action to spruce up its entrance, and the Dexter District Library for elevated beds for its new seed library.

As part of their civic beautification efforts, CAGC members plant and maintain flowers along Chelsea’s Main Street and at the Chelsea District Library.

The CAGC has more than 60 members and meets from noon to 2:30 p.m. the second Monday of the month from September through May at Chelsea First United Methodist Church.
