McKinley Road Bridge to be replaced

Lima-Township-Hall-frontWith about a dozen people in attendance, the Lima Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved an agreement with the Washtenaw County Road Commission to replace the McKinley Road Bridge later this year.

The trustees also included a slight revision to the contract to cap the township’s overrun  costs at 10 percent.

Lima Township will pay $15,000 for each of the next three years (2014-2016), and with the cost cap, will not pay more than an additional $4,500 if there are overruns on the project. The township’s expected three-year cost is $45,000.

The total projected cost of the bridge project is $180,000, which will be a shared between Sylvan Township, Lima Township and the Washtenaw County Road Commission.

The Road Commission has yet to say whether the structure will be timber or concrete, township officials said.

Township Supervisor Craig Maier said, “It would be in our (Lima Township’s) best interest to rebuild this bridge.”

The bridge is used by residents in Dexter, Lima and Sylvan townships as well as Chelsea District School buses and is located not too far from North Creek Elementary School.

Township officials issued a warning to residents that there is a scam involving someone contacting residents by phone about bathroom remodeling. This person apparently knows when residents are leaving town, so residents are asked to be careful.

In other business:

  • The board unanimously approved the signing of a new lease with the Chelsea Area Construction Agency (CACA) for office space at a cost of about $1,000 per month.
  • Discussion continued about a possible Chelsea Area Fire Authority (CAFA) substation in the township.
