Meet Dr. Andrea McRae, rehabilitation veterinarian, new at Lane Animal Hospital

About a dozen dog owners learned about the range of services provided by Dr. Andrea McRae during a meet and greet for the new rehabilitation veterinarian, who will see patients on Wednesdays at Lane Animal Hospital.

McRae, owner of Animal Rehabilitation & Wellness, PLLC, said she offers a wide range of “physical therapy modalities that can enhance, heal and restore your pet’s mobility as well as provide pain relief.”

These services include manual therapies, thermal therapies, Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation, laser therapy, soft tissue massage and home exercise programs.

She said rehabilitation is used to treat conditions involving the musculoskeletal system such as osteoarthritis, cruciate injuries, muscle and tendon injuries, post-operative care as well as neurological diseases, including spinal cord injuries and degenerative conditions, for example.

These treatments can be used in conjunction with conventional medicine or in some cases when a pet has stopped responding to conventional methods of care. She told the dog owners that she’d work with their veterinarian to tailor a specific program for the owner’s schedule and their pet to improve the animal’s quality of life.

“Canine rehabilitation is also beneficial to pets without specific orthopedic or neurologic conditions and is used to maintain optimal health and fitness in athletic as well as young and geriatric pets,” she said.

She told the pet owners that rehab can start prior to orthopedic surgery depending on the condition as well as during the recovery period. It is beneficial to those pets that cannot undergo anesthesia or surgery as it is very important to the healing process.

For neurologic conditions, it is very beneficial to start rehabilitation therapy as soon as possible – it can improve the healing time as well as keep pets mentally challenged while they recovery from their injury or condition.

Therapies can be started anytime to maintain the health and well-being of healthy pets as well as for those pets that are overweight, she said.

McRae provides an initial exam and consult, which takes about 1½ -2 hours and includes a complete orthopedic and neurologic examination. The cost — $160.

She’ll provide an exercise program that is tailored specifically to the pet’s individual condition and explains it in detail.

And yes, she’ll also work with cats and even rabbits.

She also makes house calls, offers pet exercise sessions and laser packages.
