The Purple Rose Theatre Company recently completed a $68,470 restroom renovation project, made possible in part by a grant of over $18,000 from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and matching support. This completes the extensive lobby renovations and HVAC replacement project initiated last season.

The grant was awarded through MCACA’s FY2019 competitive peer review process and was one of over 600 applications considered by a panel of in-state and out-of-state arts and culture professionals.

The project’s final phase was contracted and managed by A. R. Brouwer Company of Dexter. The theatre’s existing fully-accessible lobby toilet rooms were last updated in 2005 and have served an audience approaching a half-million persons over a total of 3,600 performances.

Organizations receiving a MCACA grant are required to match funds dollar-for-dollar.  Local support included Ford Motor Company Fund, Kohler Company, an Anonymous Foundation, and various private donors.

The renovation project includes: demolition of existing toilet rooms, installation of porcelain tile floors (designed to earn LEED credits), new wall coverings and paint, easy-clean laminate toilet partitions, linear heaters, Kohler sinks and faucets, toilet accessories and Corian quartz countertops (green building certified) and water cooler. Michigan tradespersons will perform a variety of trades: carpentry, plumbing, electrical/HVAC and painting.

The MCACA’s peer review process ensures that taxpayers who support this project through legislative appropriation and all Michigan residents and visitors have access to the highest quality arts and cultural experiences.

A complete list of grant awards around the state is available by contacting MCACA at (517) 241-4011, or by visiting the MCACA  website.
