Sheriff’s Office underwater search and rescue team saves person trapped under boat

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office logo On May 18 at 6:20 p.m., Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the Huron River in the area of Dexter-Pinckney and Bell Road in Dexter Township for the report of a person trapped under a boat in the river.

Three local people had entered the river in a row boat to go fishing, according to the police report and shortly thereafter, they collided with a sunken log which overturned the boat and threw all three into the water.

Two people were able to swim to shore but one person was still trapped under the boat as it remained stuck on the log.

The Underwater Search and Rescue Team responded to the scene and launched an inflatable vessel on the river. They were able to “extract the subject from the water without complications,” the report states and no injuries were reported.
