Thanks to South Meadows Elementary School’s approach to learning and some help from the Waterloo Natural History Association, close to 180 fourth-graders have had the chance to visit the Waterloo Recreation Area this fall.
Fourth-grade teacher Sarah Radomski wrote the grant that allowed students and teachers to attend the field trip this year, and the Waterloo Natural History Association covered the transportation costs for South Meadows.
“Students take a guided walk through nature, observing and discussing what they see in several habitats, on their way to the bog,” said Radomski. “They truly enjoy the experience and then make great curricular connections to the science activities at school.”
The students were able to study how organisms meet their needs and interact with habitats. “
“Fourth grade teachers recognize that learning takes place and resonates when our students have meaningful experiences connected to our curricular goals,” said Radomski.
