State Rep. Mark Ouimet, R-Scio Twp., reported to the Chelsea City Council Tuesday night, Aug. 14, that the House and Senate would meet today, Aug. 15, to try and find consensus on the Michigan Public School Employees Benefit System bill.
He said at one point it was thought there was agreement between the House and Senate but that fell apart.
A bill to reform the teacher retirement system was approved by the House earlier this summer, but was defeated by the Senate.
He said the legislators would meet for one day on the teacher retirement issue and then be back in Lansing again in September.
“We want this to be fiscally sound for both current and future teachers,” he told the City Council of a compromise bill.
He added that in September, the lawmakers would be looking at local government and “ways to give you more tools to stay in a fiscally sound position.”
