Sylvan Township Appoints New Clerk

By Lisa Carolin

Amanda Nimke Ballard was appointed as the new clerk of Sylvan Township at the township board’s June 1 meeting via Zoom.

Nimke Ballard, who worked with former township clerk Kathy Kennedy, who is now the township supervisor, was the only person who expressed interest in becoming clerk.

The board approved Washtenaw County Broadband Resolution 21-09. Washtenaw County is asking every township for support with the goal to be the first county in the state to make fiber available to every resident in the county, and would allocate ARP (American Rescue Plan Act of 2021) funding.

Board members also agreed to sign a letter to the City of Chelsea approving their willingness to work with the city on mutually beneficial contracts.

The topic of allowing marijuana micro businesses was raised again by Sylvan Township Treasurer Rod Branham, who continues to research the potential for the township to garner money from fees collected. Branham said he plans to consult with the township attorney and may make a motion at the July board meeting.

Kimberly Haines started her position as Sylvan Township’s accountant last week, and the board approved the job description at the June 1 meeting. Haines will be handling invoices, transactions, bank reconciliations, financial statements, will help prepare for audits, and other duties as assigned. She will earn $30 per hour, not to exceed 10 hours a week.

In other action, the board approved purchasing a new copy machine from Ricoh Copy Machine.
