The Sylvan Township Board welcomed its new trustee Cyndi Jabara at the April 4 meeting. She was recently chosen to fill the seat vacated by Roy Schmidt earlier this year.

The board received feedback from the public about a proposed investment policy. The policy states that the township treasurer is designated the investment officer of the township. Several people expressed concern that the responsibility belongs to just one person with the suggestion that the entire board be involved.

Sylvan Township Rod Branham assured the public that he must work through six financial institutions and is limited in what he can invest township funds. The board unanimously agreed (Kurt Koseck absent) to table the matter to further review the policy.

The board will also spend the month reviewing a final draft of the Sylvan Township Master Plan. Action is requested at the May 2 meeting. A copy of the plan is available on the township website.

The board unanimously approved a fireworks application for Travis Doren who requested to have a fireworks display at 6650 Lingane Road on July 8, 2017. Doren told the board that the display will last about 20-25 minutes and that it’s a private event typically attended by between 150 and 200 people.

The board also unanimously approved a request application for Heroes on the Water for Sunday, June 11 at Cavanaugh Lake. Applicant Howard Flintoft described the event as a chance for veterans to get out and around people that includes 30 kayaks, close to 30 veterans, and 40 support personnel.

In other news, Sylvan Township Clerk Kathy Kennedy announced that the State of Michigan is purchasing new election equipment and that all precincts in Washtenaw County will be using the equipment in November of this year.
