Unusual plane flys over Chelsea High School Marching Band exhibition Wednesday night

As I was shooting photos of the high school bands playing on the football field Wednesday evening, this plan flew overhead.

I thought is was rather unique looking but have no idea what kind it is.

So now I’m curious — can anyone identify what kind of plane this might be?

  1. I believe it was either a B-17 or a Boeing XB-15. I only saw it as it had passed by so I didn’t get a great look. Very cool to see though.

  2. B-17G Flying Fortress. Haven’t looked it up, but I
believe the chin turret and the ball turret under the
belly mark it as the “G” variant. Perhaps the most famous
bomber of the war. Well liked by crews due to its
ability to absorb damage, it nevertheless experienced
some horrific missions, such as the September 1943
attacks on the ball bearing plants at Schweinfurt.
Over sixty of these aircraft (and their ten-man crews)
were lost in that one mission.

  3. Both planes are definitely Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, WWII-era heavy bombers. I understand there is only one B-29 Superfortress still flying.

  4. Hi Lisa…we saw the planes too….our oldest son, who has played in this Marching Band Exhibition for the last 5 years (since it’s inception) and is now in the US Air Force (USAFA) had them sent in his memory. (big smile!) I thought they were B-52’s, so thanks to the guys that identified them!

  5. Definitly the B-17 Yankee Lady. You can go see it at the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run. It’s a pretty neat place with some great local history.
