Week in Review: Sept. 9-15

The marching band enters the stadium Friday night.

In case you missed some of the top stories this week, both the Chelsea Teachers Association and the Chelsea police officers ratified contracts.

In addition, the Chelsea JV and varsity footballs teams notched their first wins of the season, handing defeats to Ypsilanti. Before the varsity game Friday night, the Chelsea Kiwanis held a community punt, pass and kick competition — an event that hasn’t happened here in many years.

Bill Harmer, Chelsea District Library director and Paul McCann, Dexter District Library director, hold this year's community read title.

The Chelsea Community Fair Board recognized all the volunteers who work so tirelessly to bring this event to the community with a special dinner and announced that this year was in the top five for all-time attendance figures.

Saturday, the Chelsea District Library in conjunction with the Chelsea Area Wellness Foundation, kicked off the 5H Community Read for residents of the Chelsea, Dexter, Grass Lake, Manchester, and Stockbridge.

Residents are encouraged to read “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan (and I highly recommend the book) and there are healthy eating activities of all sorts planned for the next few months.

Volunteers from the Huron River Watershed Council tested the quality of water in the Mill Creek.

It was brought to my attention that I haven’t been clear about the policy for posting comments on Chelsea Update. Before I relaunched this site, I asked numerous community members how they wanted me to handle comments on stories. Without exception, I was told people wanted a return to the good old days — where opinions pro and con were submitted as letters to the editor and people had to use their full real names to have them published.

The Chelsea High School Robotics Team held a car wash at Chelsea State Bank Saturday.

Since my name is on everything I write, I’m in complete agreement with the wishes of the community. I approve all comments that are posted on the site and if a full name is not included, I send an email, explain the policy, and include my home phone number.

Some people have chosen to give me their names and others have respectfully declined. Probably a dozen comments have not appeared on the site because the writers chose not to respond to my email.

I also want to thank everyone who contacted me Monday when the site was down due to reasons beyond my control. Your concern, support, kudos and of course, contributions, mean the world to me.

I’m also asking for reader’s help. If you go by The Rock and see one you like, or if you paint it, please take a photo and send it to me at [email protected].

Also, if you’re at a sporting event, or any event for that matter, and snap a photo, I encourage you to send it to me. I try to get to as many events as possible, but I can’t get to them all.
