In 1991, the Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority (WWRA) started operating in Chelsea.
For more than 20 years we have asked you to give us your recycling sorted into separate containers and bins based on materials.
And, there have been some great improvements over the years.
Remember having to wash, scrub, and remove all paper from cans, tins, and jars? As time has gone on, we, at WWRA, have continually sought out new recycling opportunities and researched the most effective ways to recycle and serve our communities. The latest improvement, as many of you know, is our new, single-stream line which began in November, 2012.
And, as a non-profit organization, we are always struggling to find ways to be self-sustainable.
Although we are not there yet, we are well on our way and we thank you, the people of the City of Chelsea, Manchester Township, Dexter Township, Lyndon Township, Bridgewater Township, Lima Township, the member communities of WWRA, and all the people who drive to our drop-sites in support of our project.
Through your continued support, we hope to maintain the above average recycling rate that the WWRA has achieved. Although the WWRA area recycles nearly four times the amount of material as non-participating Washtenaw County, we are still only averaging about 50 percent of the possible recycled materials in our area.
We encourage you to look around and find areas of improvement, either at home, at work, or out in the community.
As a thank you for all of your support and efforts, we would like to invite you to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new building on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. at WWRA on Werkner Road.
You will have the chance to take a look around and see how recyclable materials are being sorted in a much more effective and efficient way and you will have a chance to learn more about recycling and how it benefits our communities and our world.
