Chelsea Kiwanis Club seeks Boys and Girls State participants

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Kiwanis Club sponsors high school students to attend Boys State and Girls State each year, which are week-long leadership and citizenship programs conducted on a college campus.

This year it will take place June 14-20 at Northwood University in Midland. Students are nominated by their schools, and participants are divided into subgroups referred to as cities. Each city elects municipal officials and representatives to the mock state legislature, as well as other officials, governor, etc., to mirror Michigan’s governmental leadership. Bills are passed during the week as well as other business simulating Michigan’s legislature.

Kiwanis invites participants to speak at one of our meetings after their experience. Some famous alumni include Neil Armstrong, Bill Clinton, Phil Jackson, Samuel Alito, Jane Pauley, Nick Saban, Scott Bakula, Chris Christie, Jon Bon Jovi and Michael Jordan.
