Sept. 21: Congdon Street, Safe Routes to Schools construction to begin

road constructionThe Congdon Street road project and the Safe Routes to Schools sidewalk project are both slated to begin on Monday, Sept. 21.

According to the city’s website:

Weather permitting, the Congdon Street construction project will begin on Sept. 21. C and D Hughes from Charlotte, Mich. is expected to complete the work by Halloween.

Congdon St. (Lincoln St. to W. Summit St.) – Full reconstruction project to replace the old aggregate roadbed, asphalt pavement, concrete curbs, sidewalks, storm sewer, watermain and water services. This section will be started first.

Congdon St. (W. Summit St. to South St.) – Removal and replacement of asphalt pavement, upgrade of sidewalk ramps at intersections. This section has no underground utility work proposed. Portions of this project will be done at the same time as the southern block of Congdon Street.

There will be temporary closures to traffic.  Although local traffic will be accommodated to the greatest extent possible, there will be some unavoidable disruption. The greatest disruption will be in the southern block of Congdon where the curing time for the new concrete will result in residents having no access to their driveways for 4-5 days. During this time, parking will be allowed overnight on the street.

As of Tuesday night, City Engineer Christine Linfield said she was not sure where exactly, the Safe Routes to Schools sidewalk projects would begin, but please check the city’s website for updated information. The work is expected to be completed by Nov. 6.
