Aug. 25: Run for the Rolls before 81st annual Chelsea Fair Parade

(Publisher’s note: Run for the Rolls is Saturday, Aug. 25. This information has been corrected in the story.)

Although not part of the “official” Chelsea Community Fair activities, for the last 12 years Run for the Rolls has become a popular event for area runners as well as a “warm-up event” for folks awaiting the start of the annual Chelsea Fair Parade.

This year, both events will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25.

The 5K race begins at 12:30 and the 1-mile race begins at 12:45.

Begun in 2007, the end of the race is viewed by thousands of people, who sit and stand along Old US-12 outside the fairgrounds gates awaiting the start of parade, which begins downtown at 1 p.m.

Oh, and as the name implies, age-division male and female winners are awarded the always popular Common Grill rolls.

Each year, a charity is selected to be the beneficiary of a donation, and according to the race website, since its inception, Run for the Rolls has given $5,700 to area organizations.

Past recipients include Chelsea Recreation, Chelsea High Boys and Girls X-Country Teams, Guys and Gals on the Go, Chelsea Special Olympics, St. Louis Center, Fitness for life Program.
