Bats, spiders, winter outdoor adventures at the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center

From bats to spiders and winter adventures in the woods — there are some really interesting programs taking place this month at the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center  at 17030 Bush Road in Sylvan Township.

Bats of the World: Sunday, Jan. 13 from 2-3 p.m.

“Step into the world of bats with this exciting presentation from the Organization for Bat Conservation,” according to information about this talk. Visitors can see a variety of bats up close while they learn how they produce sound waves, what they eat, where they live and what we can do to protect their habitats.

The cost is $2 per person or $5 for a family. The talk takes place at the Discovery Center, 17030 Bush Road in the Waterloo Recreation Area and advance registration requested at 734-475-3170.

Winter Orienteering:  Sunday, Jan. 20 from 2-4 p.m.

“Challenge yourself to an afternoon adventure in the forest,” according to the information. “Winter is a great time of year for learning how to find your way in the woods.”

This event is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Compasses will be provided or if you have one, bring your own. The cost is $2 per person or $5 for a family.

The event begins at the Discovery Center and advance registration requested at 734-475-3170, and it’s limited to 35 participants.

Spiders and Their Kin: Sunday, Jan. 27 from 2-3 p.m.

Dr. Cara Shillington will introduce participants to live spiders, tarantulas, scorpions and other intriguing invertebrates.

Learn about poisonous spiders in Michigan, where they hang out, and how to avoid them.

The cost is $2 per person or $5 for a family, and it takes place at the Discovery Center, 17030 Bush Road. Advance registration is requested at 734-475-3170.
