Chelsea boys’ track coach Eric Swager called the Bulldog’s season opener a fine showing as the team finished second in last weekend’s 2014 Kermit Ambrose Invitational at Bowen Fieldhouse on the campus of Eastern Michigan University.

“This was a fine showing against 27 other Division I and Division II schools,” the coach said, adding, “We are all in the same boat. Poor weather precludes a lot of technical practice outdoors, so this was really just a big practice session and an opportunity for kids to run fast in a nice facility.”

Among the team highlights were:

Jacob Stubbs was outstanding, running a tactical race in the 1,600 to win easily. He also turned in a snappy 2:01 in his 800-meter leg in our runner-up 3,200 relay. That race also saw three personal record performances by Jacob Becker, Bram Parkinson and Adam Bowersox.

He Bulldog vaulters each scored, with Denrick Acton jumping a lifetime best, and the Chelsea throwers each scored points with Craig Reiley heaving a lifetime best as well.

“We have a lot of work to go on our sprints, hurdles, and jumps, but that is to be expected at this point in the season,” the coach said, adding, “We will keep on hammering as we roll along toward the outdoor season.”
