Chelsea girls track and field 5-2 for season, 3rd in SEC championship

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Loren Thorburn for the information in this story.)

The weather forecast did not look good for SEC Track and Field White Divisional Championships, which were held at Chelsea on Thursday, May 9.

However, the rain held off and temperatures were in the low 70s with some wind gusts during most of the meet. Adrian, Chelsea, Dexter, Jackson, Pinckney Tecumseh, Ypsilanti Lincoln, and Ypsilanti Community make up the SEC White Division.

It was a very competitive meet with many excellent performances from many of the participating schools. The final standings were Pinckney 157, Dexter 121, Chelsea 80, Ypsilanti Lincoln 79, Adrian 63, Tecumseh 61, Jackson 58, Ypsilanti Community 8.

Chelsea ended up 5-2 in the regular dual meet season and took 3rd place in the championship meet, so for the regular season the girls finished 3rd in the league standings.

Overall, Pinckney won the league, while Dexter was runner up. We expected Pinckney and Dexter would battle for the top position based on their talent and depth said coach Loren Thorburn.

“We wanted to be competitive in the league and we did just that. We had three All-League performances and 20 top-eight places,” he said.

Jordan Holton placed third in the shot put with a 32′ 3″ throw and placed 2nd in the discus with a throw of 96′ 8″.

Riley Davis placed third in the high jump with a height of 5′ 0″.

Morgan Majeske placed 7th and threw 28′ 8.5″ (3-foot personal record)

The 4x400m relay team (consisting up Makayla Kegerreis, Kendra Patterson, Riley Thorburn, and Myranda Montoye) had a season-best time of 4:14.59 and were runner-up to the Pinckney team.

The Bulldogs will compete in the regional meet on Friday, which will be held at Milan High School. There will be 16 teams in this regional meet, which will be a competitive meet that will determine a regional team champion and individual state qualifiers.

The top two finishers are automatic qualifiers for the state meet, while others need to make additional qualifier standards on that day in order to make it to the state meet.

“It will be an exciting and intense day and we are looking forward to it,” the coach said.
