Chelsea girls’ track and field: 7 PR’s, 3 medals at Larry Steeb Meet of Champions

We had very hot day at the Larry Steeb Meet of Champions Tuesday at the Dexter Track and Field Stadium with lots of excellent performances from the county area.

This meet is similar to championship meets held at the county level at the end of the season and showcase top end athletes in the area. The Chelsea girls team brought 13 girls to compete at this high-level meet said coach Loren Thorburn.

We wanted to see if we could accomplish some personal records (PRs) and prepare our seven state qualifiers for the upcoming state meet in Zeeland on Saturday, June 2.

The girls did wonderful job in the heat yesterday. We had seven PRs and we medaled in three events.

Highlights:

Jordan Holton placed 6th in the shot put with a throw of 32′ 7″ (a PR). She also PRed in the discus with a throw of 105′ 8″ and placed 3rd in that event. “Jordan is hungry to work in the off-season in shot and discus to be a state qualifier next year,” her coach said.

Kyle Bragg threw a 90′ in discus, which is a PR for her.

“She has steadily improved her performance in this event through the season. We are excited for her return next year and her leadership,” Thorburn said.

Kendra Patterson ran her best time in 100m hurdles with a time of 18.69. “She continues to train hard in these closing weeks of the season. It paid off last night,” Thorburn said.

State qualifiers Jenna Gileczek and Sabrina Matusko pole vaulted and were close to some personal records at the meet.

Hailey Neal jumped well with distance 14′ 11″.

“She has promise in this event as she looks to jump in the 15’s next season consistently,” her coach said.

Kaehla Manly ran a solid race in the 300m hurdles and placed 8th overall in the event with a time of 48.95. She ran solid race leading into the state meet.

Sydney Matusik and Myranda Montoye both ran the open 800m race and turned in PRs. Sydney ran a 2:22.64 and placed 10th overall, while Myranda ran a 2:28.08 and placed 3rd in her heat. Sydney and Myranda appear to be ready for their state meet events.

In the next to last event of the meet, the DMR (distance medley relay) squad (composed of Allison Hause, Riley Thorburn, Jacqueline Taylor, and Emily Chizek) ran a season best time of 13:16.03, which placed 1st in the event. Hause ran an outstanding lead leg in the event, which opened up a huge lead on the other teams.
