Chelsea Human Rights Commission has an open seat

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission will be one of the groups represented Monday, Jan. 20, at a Martin Luther King Day event at the Chelsea District Library. That was agreed upon at the HRC’s Jan. 8 meeting.

The library will present a speaker from the ACLU talking about grass roots organizing, and the library has invited service organizations, including the HRC, to have information available.

It was announced that Debra Hockersmith resigned as an HRC member in December. That creates an opening on the commission. If you would like to apply, more information can be found at http://city-chelsea.org.

HRC members Susan Morrel-Samuels and Dan Kaminsky are both coming to the end of their terms in February; However, both plan to reapply to be HRC members.

Members approved a 2019 report to submit to Chelsea City Council on what the organization did in the past year. It was put together by Morrel-Samuels.

She also put together ideas from HRC members for a 2020 Annual Plan, which members approved. It includes basing priorities on the results of the survey – community diversity, bullying, and racism. That plan will also be submitted to City Council for approval.

The HRC’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.
