The Chelsea High School FIRST Robotics Team 1502 Technical Difficulties attended its first competition recently at Southfield High School.

FIRST, which stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an international program that works to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) through the creation of high school robotics teams.

This year’s game, Aerial Assist, is played by two competing alliances of three robots each on a 25’ x 54’ foot field that contains high and low goals at each end. The objective of the game is to score 2-foot wide exercise balls in your team’s goals. Points are awarded based on which goal the ball is scored in. Additional points can be earned by working with other robots on your alliance to move and score balls in the goals.

Despite some “technical difficulties”, the team won 5 of its 12 qualification matches ranking them 24th out of 40 teams.

They were chosen by team 3604, The Goon Squad from Woodhaven, to be a part of the number two alliance along with team 51, Wings of Fire, from Pontiac. The alliance had a hard fought competition losing the defining match by only two points.

The team would like to thank The Chrysler Foundation, Tetra Tech, Roberts Paint and Body, Chelsea Tool, and Mike’s Home Repair for their continued support.

Additionally, the team welcomes everyone to attend its next competitions at St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph on March 28-29, and Bedford High School in Temperance on April 4-5.
