The participants in the Chelsea Senior Center’s first euchre tournament on Friday, June 24, took their card games very seriously.

“I just love to play the game,” said participant Maryann Myers, founder of the center’s euchre card group. “It’s a fast game.”

Tables of four were spread out in the Washington Street Education Center’s cafeteria following a hearty lunch of lasagna, salad and garlic bread.

“We’ve had a successful bridge tournament, and we have an active euchre group that meets in the evenings, so we want to start a yearly tournament,” explained Jennifer Smith, program manager for the Senior Center.

According to Senior Center Executive Director Trinh Pifer,  the euchre tournament offered “friendly wagering, but it’s more about bragging rights.”

“Euchre is a combination of skill and sheer luck,” said Pifer. “It’s fast moving enough to keep it interesting.”

Based on the combination of enjoyment and intensity demonstrated by the participants, there will be more euchre tournaments at the Chelsea Senior Center in the future.
