Earlier this week, about 40 people filed a room in the Chelsea Senior Center for a 60-minute seminar titled “Who Can You Trust?” which was intended to help folks avoid estate planning mistakes.

Sponsored by the State Bar of Michigan, this program is being held across the state and local legal experts will be there to discuss this very important topic.

Presenting were John McDermott, a Chelsea elder law attorney, and Kathleen Poelker, an Ann Arbor probate attorney.

“The State Bar of Michigan has put on seminars state-wide at senior centers to educate the public about avoiding estate planning mistakes and to avoid non-lawyers,” said McDermott.

Larry Galligan, a retired mental health professional, said he found the seminar “very helpful. I think there’s a lot of confusion about guardianship and power of attorney.”

The two lawyers also handed out packets of information for the seniors to take home, which covered a variety of estate planning topics.
