The Chelsea Lacrosse Team played host to Ann Arbor Greenhills for a first round playoff game on Friday, May 16, and won 14-4 advancing to the second round.

“We started the game out fast with senior caption Baily Weatherwax finding Tyler Stealgreave for the opening goal of the game 38 seconds into the match, said coach Joe Koengeter.

Greenhills would then score two unanswered goals, but with 2:55 left in the first quarter Weatherwax would find the back of the net to tie the game.

Jonah Bogarin scored a goal to take the lead with 10 seconds left in the first quarter.

From there it was all Bulldogs with Chris Hudson, Ryan O’Quinn (2 goals), Jack Hancock, Jake Perry, and Christin Clippert scoring goals in the second quarter, and Chelsea took a 9-2 lead into half-time.

The third quarter started out much like the game with Clippert scoring just 44 seconds in.  Mike Beneteau and Bogarin would each score in the quarter, while the defense lead by Dominic Goderis, Grant Bater, and Josh Bach would hold strong not allowing Greenhills to score.

Bogarin and Weatherwax would each score a goal in the 4th quarter while Greenhills would notch 2 goals as well.

Dustin Becket was the goal tender for the first half of the game with 3 saves while Josh Chiccio was the goalie for the majority of the second half with 4 saves. Each goalie gave up two goals.

“The game had a great atmosphere and the temperatures gave a fall Friday night football feel,” said coach Joe Koengeter, who added, “This was a great win for us, we have had a bit of an up and down season but we played some of our best lacrosse Friday night.”

The coach said the team was “right where we want to be, playing our best lacrosse of the season in the playoffs.”

The JV lacrosse team had a great season, as well, he said, losing one game to Saline. “There were many JV players brought up for the playoff game and all of them saw the field in the win,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for them and they fit in very well allowing shorter shifts and fresher legs during the game. It was great to see the student section rush the field after the game to celebrate with the team.”

The team travels to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Wednesday, May 21, for a 4 p.m. start.
