The front of Dexter Township Hall

Do you live in Dexter Township and want to have a say in the township’s future?

Here’s your chance to step up and serve on a commission or board that helps shape important issues in the township, such as the Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Board of Review and the Public Safety Committee.

Below is a summary of what’s available and what the position requires.

Planning Commission: two 3-year appointments with terms ending 12-31-2015.

You should be qualified electors of Dexter Township, willing to represent all interests in the township including agriculture, business, residential, lakes residential, or recreation.

The Planning Commission is responsible for making and adopting a basic plan to be used as a guide for the development of the township and for the evaluation and approval or denial of site plans for development in the township. The commission generally meets two times per month on Tuesday evenings.

Zoning Board of Appeals: one 3-year term ending 12-31-2015.

ZBA members hear and decide a variety of questions that arise in the administration of the zoning ordinance, including interpretation of the zoning text and maps, appeals of zoning decisions and variance requests.

Members of the ZBA must be qualified electors of Dexter Township and represent all interests in the township. ZBA meetings are held once per month, generally on Tuesday evenings.

Board of Review: three representatives and two alternate representatives, all 2-year terms ending 12-31-2014.

The purpose of the BOR is to ensure that all township property is assessed fairly and equally. The primary business of the BOR is to hear and decide property assessment appeals and to certify the township assessment roll. All BOR members must be qualified electors, and owners and taxpayers of Dexter Township.

The BOR meets extensively in March (6-10 meetings of 3-6 hours) and once in July and December.

Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC): one full-time appointment for the remainder of a 2-year term ending 12-31-2013.

The purpose of the PSAC is to provide an assessment of the overall structure, service levels and funding requirements for the provision of fire, police and emergency medical services to Dexter Township and to provide recommendations to the Dexter Township Board to support and promote the delivery of high quality, cost effective public safety services.

To the extent possible, members will be representative of the major population centers and geographic areas within the township.

Those interested in applying for any of the expiring or open appointments should send a letter of interest and resume via regular mail to Pat Kelly, Township Supervisor, 6880 Dexter-Pinckney Road, Dexter, MI 48130, or email [email protected]., or fax to Kelly at 426-3833 no later than Dec. 10.
