Jan. 23: Kiwanis Club to hear about Chelsea’s parks and recreation plan

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Gary Munce and Ben Fineman from the Michigan Broadband Cooperative. They explained their goal to get broadband service to all in Michigan who are unserved or underserved.

The two have been working on a volunteer basis and have made progress getting the majority of Lyndon Township residents to support a millage to pay for installation and servicing of fiber optic cable, which is by far the best way to get the fastest internet service. They are surveying other townships and hope to get their cooperation to go in with Lyndon Township for economies of scale.

This Monday, club members will hear from Chelsea City Council member Melissa Johnson and City Manager John Hanifan. They will discuss the recent adoption of Chelsea’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan and its implementation.

Our club is happy to be part of the plan, installing two musical pieces of playground equipment at Pierce Park — The Ladybug and The Butterfly. The club will donate to the city for maintenance of the Timbertown playground that many of our members had worked, along with numerous neighbors, to construct some years ago.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
