Lima Township Planning Commission looking at fee structure for code violations

Fines for zoning code violations may be increasing in Lima Township.

The Lima Township Planning Commission voted to table the discussion at its Feb. 27 meeting, but not before agreeing to take a look at new language for the ordinance that would potentially increase the fines.

“What prompted this was increasing the fine from $50 to something that gets somebody’s attention,” explained Lima Zoning Administrator Tom Caplis

The discussion is expected to be on the March agenda as well as another subject that was discussed at Monday night’s meeting – what to do about the township’s festoon sign ordinance. Planning commission chair Marlene Consiglio recommended commission members take a look at other townships’ ordinances.

“Our ordinance says the township board must approve festoon signs on an individual basis,” said Caplis. “Are we too restrictive or too loose?”

According to Northville Township’s ordinance, a festoon sign is defined as “A sign  where  incandescent  light bulbs,  banners,  pennants  or  other  such features are hung overhead and are not an integral, physical part of the building or structure they are intended to serve.”

The planning commission unanimously approved two public hearings for the March 27 meeting.

A public hearing is set for 7 p.m. for a special land use application, and following that another public hearing, which will be held regarding a special use permit for the St. Vladimir Orthodox Church.

The church is planning a cemeteryaddition as well as an addition for a temporary school room said Township Supervisor Craig Maier.
