Recent obituary: Mary Gertrude Hindelang

Hindelang,-M.-Gertrude-webMary Gertrude Hindelang, age 98, passed away on May 18, 2014, in Phoenix, Arizona.

She was born on June 28, 1915, in Chelsea and is the last of five siblings.Gertrude is survived by her sister-in-law Dorothy Hindelang, niece Patricia Woods, nephew George Staffan, many grand- and great-grand-nieces and -nephews, and many dear friends from ages 10 to 90.

A woman of purpose, independent, focused, and goal-oriented, Gertrude graduated from the University of Detroit in Business and Finance where she was president of her class and also the first woman to receive a CPA.

She was a student in Who’s Who in American Universities and was Detroit President then National President of AWSCPA (American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants).

Gertrude moved to Arizona sight unseen where she lived for more than 55 years, practicing her profession with private clients and as controller for Arizona Air Tool.

Already a golf enthusiast and league bowler, Gertrude developed a passion for hockey and basketball, bringing her special attention and accolades from the Arizona teams she so ardently supported. World-traveler Gertrude took adventure and intellectual curiosity seriously, be it the Olympics in Austria, a team “mascot” to Hawaii, or a solo freighter cargo ship trip to Australia, New Zealand, Shanghai, and Tokyo.

What a life – what a woman – so much that so many have learned and received from Gertrude.

She will be forever loved and admired by those who continue to celebrate her life.
