Sylvan Board adopts resolution of support for Road Commission, OKs letters of protest for Board of Review

The Sylvan Township Board unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the Washtenaw County Road Commission at its March 4 meeting.

The resolution was adopted in response to consideration by the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners to dissolve the Road Commission and take over its powers and duties thru Michigan Public Acts 14 and 15.

According to the resolution, Board Members maintain that the poor condition of Washtenaw County and Sylvan Township roads is not due to administrative failure by the WCRC, rather a result of inadequate state funding. But given the obvious limitations of funding, the resolution states that WCRC commissioners and staff have historically provided a high level of service to Sylvan Township residents.

The township board also expressed concern in the resolution that the needs of townships, especially rural communities, may be neglected if township-allocated Michigan Transportation Fund dollars are controlled by the WCBOC, since four of the nine members of this board represent districts primarily encompassing Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

Township Supervisor Scott Cooper said on Thursday that the resolution of support for the Road Commission will now be sent to the WCRC.

The board also adopted a resolution to allow written protests by residents to the Board of Review. The board has scheduled meetings on March 10 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and March 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The board will receive letters of protest regarding assessments from Sylvan taxpayers thru the March 12 meeting.
