Throughout December: UMRC Foundation-Chelsea Library present ‘Artful Aging’ exhibition

The United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) Foundation and the Chelsea District Library are pleased to present an Artful Aging exhibition from Dec. 3 through Dec. 30 in the library’s first floor lobby during regular library hours.

This exhibition will showcase acrylic and watercolor paintings as well as pottery created by the residents of UMRC’s Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC).

“The UMRC Foundation was one of just 15 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive a grant from Aroha Philanthropies to encourage creativity among older adults,” explains Wendy Brightman, UMRC Foundation president in a press release.

“This grant has allowed UMRC to offer arts instruction, taught by local teaching artists, to residents at CRC.  Many of our course participants had never tried their hand at creative arts before taking one of these classes.  Each work of art is a testament that every individual is capable of creating beauty, regardless of age,” she said.

Research has shown that the arts play an important role in healthy aging.

CRC resident, Julia Strimer says, “The Artful Aging program gives us a chance to experience new, exciting projects and to grow as individuals.  The classes I took opened my mind and heart to creativity within myself and others…Artful Aging allows our spirit to remain young.”

Chelsea District Library Director Lori Coryell says, “The Chelsea District Library is honored to partner with UMRC to showcase these creative talents in this exhibition during the month of December.”
