Michigan seniors will have new residential choices in spring 2017 when new independent living homes become available on the Chelsea Retirement Community campus.

United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC), will operate the 41-unit Prairie Cottage neighborhood. The first model cottages are under construction and will open for tours in August.

“Between 2000 and 2030, the population of older adults in Washtenaw County is expected to triple,” said John Thorhauer, UMRC president and CEO. “The time to prepare for this significant growth is now. Today’s seniors want quality, active lifestyles and choices and the Prairie Cottages neighborhood is aimed at providing both.”

Each cottage will range from 1,154 to 1,682 total square feet with one- and two-bedroom floor plans. Attached garages and options for sunrooms, patios and dens also are available.

“The Prairie Cottages offer all the amenities of a well-appointed and maintenance-free home,” said Ashley Martin, Chelsea Retirement Community executive director. “Nestled among natural surroundings on the CRC campus, residents can experience the feel of the country, while enjoying close proximity to Chelsea and Ann Arbor.”

Prairie Cottage residents will also have access to CRC’s full life plan community, Martin said.  “As a nonprofit, faith-based organization, we are proud to offer residents this peace of mind should future care be needed.”
