Yellow Door to host fundraising lunch at The Alehouse for boardwalk replacement project

Yellow Door will host a benefit lunch for the Waterloo Natural History Association boardwalk replacement project in the Waterloo Recreation Area on Saturday, March 2, from noon-2 p.m. at the Chelsea Alehouse.

Open to everyone, guests are asked to donate $15 (or more) in exchange for a lunch prepared from local ingredients by the Alehouse chefs.

The goal is to raise $5,000 to cover the costs of replacement of the boardwalk, which is double the Yellow Door’s typical fundraising goal, according to information about the event.

“We have never done a Yellow Door lunch and are excited to partner with the Chelsea Alehouse Brewery,” says Yellow Door co-founder Jane Pacheco.

During the last 36 years, the boardwalks at the Discovery Center have withstood the impact of thousands of visitor’s trampling feet and they need to be replaced before becoming a safety concern.

Tom Hodgson, a Waterloo Natural History Association volunteer, said previously that the section of boardwalk just prior to entering the bog is in the worst shape, and it will be the first to be replaced.

To ensure that the boardwalks are ready for the spring, about $5,000 must be raised.

Chris and Aubrey Martinson, Alehouse owners, are donating the space, supplies, labor and their chefs for the fundraiser, and in addition, the couple will donate a percentage of their sales to WNHA.

The menu features two options:

  • Michigan Roast Beef Sammie on a Baguette with horseradish cream cheese spread served with kettle cooked Great Lakes potato chips and The Brinery’s turnip pickles
  • Pulled BBQ Pork on a Challah bun served with kettle cooked Great Lakes potato chips and The Brinery’s turnip pickles.

Beverages include Mighty Good Coffee and Calder Dairy milk, plus, a selection of Alehouse beers will be available for an additional cost.

The local food sources (purchased through Lunasa.us) are Back Forty Acres, Calder Dairy, Ernst Farm, Great Harvest Bread Company of Ann Arbor, Great Lakes Potato Chips, Greystone Creamery, LA Baguette, Mighty Good Coffee, and The Brinery.

All donations will go directly to the WNHA thanks to sponsors including: Jim and Nancy Paul, Dave and Joanne Rowe, and Rick Taylor (Reinhart Realty).

If you would like to donate, but cannot attend the event on Saturday, you can mail a check to: WNHA at the Discovery Center, 17030 Bush Road, Chelsea, MI 48118.
