Four Beach Middle School (BMS) students have been recognized for their artwork in both regional and state art shows hosted by the Michigan Art Education Association.

Mireille Hunter, Lilly McCalla, Cat Rossi, and Lucy Taylor had artwork sent to the Region 3 Virtual art show by Beach art teacher Kim Eder. Normally the show is an actual exhibition, but this year it is a virtual show that includes Washtenaw, Jackson, Lenawee, and Monroe Counties.

Mireille and Lucy, who are both seventh-graders, had their work chosen to move to a state show. They along with Lilly, who is also a seventh-grader, were assigned to create a 2D-3D combination sculpture using a nature photo reference.

“They used a grid method to  proportionally draw out their subject on the cardboard,” said Eder. “They then determined what parts would stick out and adapted their 2D drawing to a 3D sculpture. Finally, they decided on how to color their piece using paper mache, acrylic paint, or both.”

Cat is a sixth-grader, who made her own air dry clay from glue and cornstarch and then designed the clay around a recycled jar, using a root beer bottle, homemade clay, paper cache, Popsicle sticks, and acrylic paint to create her artwork.

Eder looked for entries into the show that combined independent work with quality craftsmanship.

“Despite the restrictions that Covid 19 has placed on them this year, all four artists went above and beyond with their time and effort on their pieces – and it showed,” said Eder. “I am very proud of them.”

Beach Principal Nick Angel says, “I could not be more proud of our students whose creative expression is being recognized. Mrs. Eder has Courtesy elevated the Art experience at BMS.”
